“It meant so much to honor Amy Sherald and Kehinde Wiley, both artists of extraordinary vision, as we welcomed their iconic portraits of Barack Obama and Michelle Obama to LACMA, alongside Steven Spielberg—one of the greatest artists of American cinema,” said Michael Govan, LACMA CEO, and Wallis Annenberg Director. “As co-chairs of the Art+Film Gala for 10 years, Eva Chow and Leonardo DiCaprio have made this such an important event for all the creative industries in Los Angeles, and I’m so appreciative of their dedication to the gala and the museum.”

Art+Film Gala co-chair Eva Chow said, “I am delighted that the return of the Art+Film Gala was such a tremendous success. It was such a pleasure to recognize the creative achievements of all three of our honorees and to celebrate a decade of art and film at LACMA with our longstanding partner Gucci. I’m so grateful to Alessandro Michele, Marco Bizzari, and everyone at Gucci for their friendship and steadfast support, as well as to Celeste for giving us a spectacular performance that no one will soon forget.”
Renowned artists, distinguished guests, and luminaries from the art, film, fashion, music, and entertainment industries arrived at the Art+Film Gala’s red carpet adjacent to Chris Burden’s iconic Urban Light (2008) on Wilshire Boulevard. Guests then enjoyed a cocktail reception and a DJ set by the legendary D-Nice outdoors. Guests also visited the Resnick Pavilion to see two new exhibitions, The Obama Portraits Tour featuring paintings by honorees Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald, as well as Black American Portraits. Following cocktails, guests moved into the Art+Film pavilion overlooking Michael Heizer’s Levitated Mass (2012) for a special dinner—a collaboration between chef Joachim Splichal of Patina Restaurant Group and chef Mattia Agazzi of Gucci Osteria da Massimo Bottura in Beverly Hills. Recently awarded a Michelin Star, Gucci Osteria da Massimo Bottura Beverly Hills represents a culinary universe by interlacing the colors and flavors of Italy with its new Californian surroundings.
After Michael Govan and Eva Chow welcomed the crowd, Tracee Ellis Ross gave a tribute to honoree Amy Sherald. Ava DuVernay then gave a tribute to honoree Kehinde Wiley, which was followed by a short film about the artists by Christine Turner. Guillermo del Toro then presented a tribute to Steven Spielberg, and guests enjoyed a montage of the director’s films.
Following the dinner program, guests were invited back outside where Sienna Miller introduced the evening’s performer, Celeste, who delivered a captivating performance of soulful hits from her debut album “Not Your Muse.” Shabaka Hutchings and the Free Nationals shared the stage for her set, and Florence Welch joined Celeste for a special duet of the Marvin Gaye classic “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.”

Santa Barbara, CA The Alisal fire has already caused major damages in Santa Barbara County. Sparked in early October, the wildfire grew to 16,800 acres, destroying Amtrak railroads, closing parts of Highway 101, prompting evacuations, and most recently, threatening power outages. According to the Country of Santa Barbara, as of October 15th, with cooperative winds and hard work, the fire is 41% contained.
Motorists are reminded that it’s an ongoing firefighting effort and to use caution if driving on the 101. For everyone’s safety, extra law enforcement will be on patrol.
Of the 439 structures threatened, three residences and two outbuildings were destroyed. 1,731 personnel were assigned to the fire.
The Alisal fire joins the long list of fires that have ravaged California this summer. Experts say the climate crisis has created ideal weather conditions for fires to spark and spread at uncontrollable speeds.
One of the organizations that has had an impact with its disaster relief campaign is the American Red Cross. Between June and September, the nonprofit provided over 19,700 overnight stays in emergency lodgings for those affected by fires. The Red Cross also served more than 87,500 meals/snacks and deployed over 1,300 disaster workers.
A Temporary Evacuation Point (TEP) was established for those forced from their homes due to the #AlisalFire in Santa Barbara County at Dos Pueblos High School in Goleta.
Since critical wildfire weather is expected to continue in the west during this fall, these are the safety recommendations that the American Red Cross provides for wildfires:
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO NOW Have access to alerts and notifications so you can monitor conditions and receive instructions from local officials, even during a power outage. Keep track of fires near you so you can be ready to evacuate quickly. You may have only minutes to get out. Register to receive any free emergency alerts from your community. Understand your community’s plan to notify individuals with disabilities.
Purchase a battery-powered radio to receive information from local authorities during a power outage.
Find an outdoor water source such as a pond, well, even a swimming pool, and have a hose that can reach any area of your property.
Create a fire-resistant zone free of leaves, debris or flammable materials for at least 30 feet out from your home.
Regularly clean roofs and gutters.
Make sure driveway entrances and your house number are clearly marked so fire vehicles can get to your home.
Designate a room that can be closed off from outside air. Close all doors and windows. Set up a portable air cleaner to keep indoor pollution levels low when smoky conditions exist.
Use fire-resistant materials to build, renovate or make repairs.
Post emergency phone numbers by every phone in your house and make sure everyone has those numbers in their cell phones.
Download the free Red Cross app “emergency” to help keep you and your loved ones safe with real-time alerts, open Red Cross shelter locations, and safety advice on wildfires and other emergencies.
BE PREPARED TO EVACUATE AT A MOMENT’S NOTICE and obey all evacuation orders from officials. Follow these steps (if time allows):
Shut all windows and doors. Remove flammable window shades, curtains and close metal shutters.
Move flammable furniture to the center of the room, away from windows and doors.
Shut off gas at the meter; turn off pilot lights. Shut off the air conditioning.
Gather up flammable items from the exterior of the house and bring them inside (patio furniture, toys, trash cans).
Turn off propane tanks. Move propane BBQ appliances away from structures.
Don’t leave sprinklers on or water running, they can affect critical water pressure.
Back your loaded car into the driveway and keep all doors and windows closed.
Ensure your emergency supplies kit is in your vehicle.
The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides comfort to victims of disasters; supplies about 40% of the nation’s blood; teaches skills that save lives; distributes international humanitarian aid; and supports veterans, military members and their families. The Red Cross is a nonprofit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to deliver its mission. For more information, please visit redcross.org or cruzrojaamericana.org, or visit on Twitter at @RedCross.
Huntington Beach, CA Heal the Bay works to mobilize LA’s diverse communities to protect coastlines, restore waterways and speak out for clean water policy. The nonprofit has begun to take action on the massive oil spill that occurred starting on October 3rd off the coast of Orange County. 126,000 gallons of crude oil gushed from a seafloor pipe, owned by Amplify Energy, into the ocean.
The oil spill has affected many birds and fish who are washing ashore injured or dead. Seals, dolphins, and other marine mammals are also at great risk of swimming in contaminated water. The oil has also reached the sensitive and rare coastal wetlands at Talbert Marsh, a critical natural environment not only for wildlife habitat but also for improving water quality.
Booms deployed by the City of Huntington Beach at Talbert Wetlands to prevent the further spread of oil.
Heal the Bay is encouraging people to stay away from the spill for their own safety. The Science and Policy team is working on a public call to action with specific policy demands that will be shared on the nonprofit’s blog soon. Aministrators ask that people don’t intervene on their own if they encounter injured or oiled wildlife. Instead, report this to the Oiled Wildlife Care Network at 1-877-823-6926.
Heal the Bay is an environmental nonprofit established in 1985 that is dedicated to making the coastal waters and watersheds in Greater Los Angeles safe, healthy, and clean. We use science, education, community action, and advocacy to fulfill our mission.

Los Angeles, CA. On August 21, 2021 the Hammer Museum at UCLA opened two new exhibitions to the public. For their Houseguest exhibition, the museum invited Monica Majoli, a Los Angeles-based artist and professor of art at UC Irvine to create art out of works from the collections of the museum and the Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts. Majoli’s exhibition is called ‘Shadows Fall Down’ and explores the human relationship with the body, in terms of both sensuality and sadness.
A multimedia collection called ‘The Histories (Old Black Joe)’ was revealed on the same day as the Hammer Projects exhibition. The collection looks at the effects that culture, geography and American history all have on each other. The collection’s creator, David Hartt, is an artist living in Philadelphia and working as an associate professor in the University of Pennsylvania’s Department of Fine Arts.
The Armand Hammer Collection, an art collection that showcases the tastes and interests of the Hammer Museum’s founder, will return to the museum on August 28, 2021. In light of the Covid-19 pandemic, the museum additionally continues to hold events online and more information about these events can be found on their website.

Culver City, CA. Each year, on the third Saturday of September, the Ballona Creek Renaissance contributes to Coastal Cleanup Day. The Culver City community, along with thousands of other communities around the world, do their part to reduce pollution in their neighborhoods. Volunteers for the Ballona Creek Renaissance focus on designated areas of the creek, removing trash on the banks, from the water, and the bike path or fencing.
Organizers say, “We discover lots of other items which somehow make their way into the creek. Previous cleanups have yielded toys, balls, shopping carts, carpeting, signs, mattresses, dead animals, and drugs and medical equipment. We ask the City to remove dangerous items. After the cleanup is complete, the City or County will dispose of all the trash collected. In truth, the cleanup is symbolic, representing just a tiny fraction of the trash in the creek, but it raises awareness.”
Below is a video about the program:
Ballona Creek is a flood-controlled channel that is approximately nine miles long. During the dry heat, the creek flows with urban runoff, which contains pollutants from the city. Coastal Cleanup Day is hosted just before Southern California’s rainy season. The volunteers, made up of adults, students, and young children alike, typically spend two to three hours at the creek during the Ballona Creek Renaissance’s advertised cleanups.
For more information on Coastal Cleanup Day, and Coastal Cleanup Month, visit its founding organization Heal The Bay. To learn more about the Ballona Creek Renaissance and its upcoming projects, click here.
